Most stories tend to follow the three act rule in which the story is composed of a clearly identifiable beginning, middle and end. On the other end of the spectrum we have adventure games such as To The Moon that have no exciting gameplay and rely entirely on their story to be the selling point. For example, sports games such as the FIFA and Madden franchises do not feature stories at all, as the selling point of the game is that it is a simulation of the sport in question. The genre of a game has, for the most part of gaming history, had a dictating role in the story of the game and its perceived quality and this is due to different genres relying differently on how strong their story is.

Video games have a multitude of genres, some of which it share with TV and film such as horror and action but there are also many that are exclusive to them such as first and third person shooters, puzzle games, platformers, fighting and role playing games to mention a few. The newest form of story telling to emerge has been video games, with the quality of these stories becoming far higher as the popularity of the medium increases. Within the last century story telling has evolved even further with films and television bringing stories to the masses and have been extremely successful industries since they began. Plays and theatre have been around for thousands of years, acting out stories for audiences.
Eventually stories would become recorded by writing them down and keeping them as books. These stories would have changed with each generation and rendition of it as people would add or forget details or embellish to make it more exciting, leading to many great myths and legends.
Originally, when humans lacked the skills of literacy, stories would have been told orally with one person telling it to others spreading it by word of mouth. Stories have been a part of human culture for likely as long as human culture itself has existed, and the methods in which these stories are told has constantly evolved as technology has advanced allowing new ways for stories to be told and passed down.
